Chapter 6

Gianna was putting more of her possessions into boxes for her move when the intercom buzzed. Lifting the receiver, she was surprised to hear a male voice responding in an Italian accent.

“Who is it?” She hadn’t been expecting any visitors.

“Gianna. Don’t tell me you have forgotten me?”

“Angelo? No, I haven’t. Why are you here?”

“Can I come up? I need to talk to you.”

Gianna paused for a moment before answering. “Angelo, we really don’t have anything to talk about.”

“But maybe we do now, Gianna. Let me in, and I will explain."

She frowned. She had come to New York to recover from their break-up. Did she really want him invading her personal space again?

“No, Angelo. Our time for talking is long past. Good night.”

“But Gianna,” he hadn’t expected her to respond like this. “Gianna, we really need to talk.”

“Why? We no longer have any connection. We haven’t for years.”

“But that is why we have to talk. We can make a connection again.”

She sighed in frustration. “Angelo, I don’t want to make a connection again. Not after how you treated me.”

“Gianna, you know that was my mother’s fault.”

“No, Angelo. It was your fault. As an adult, you had to make your own decisions.”

“Gianna?”

“Good night, Angelo. And don’t come round here again.”

Slamming down the receiver, she reflected this was how she would deal with anybody who messed with her feelings again. And that included Alessandro, should he ever call by − which he probably wouldn’t. Deciding that from now on, any man in her life would have to listen to what she had to say; she went back to packing.

Now she was glad, really glad that she had decided to return to Italy. Life in America was suddenly becoming too complicated, too shallow. Back in Italy, she could rebuild.
